WHILE PROMOTING GOOD HEALTH TO OTHERS, WE TRY TO BEGIN WITH OURSELVES

Toiyabe Indian Health Project is a family centered, tribal controlled program begun in 1970. Today we offer comprehensive serves to Paiute, Shoshone and Washoe people from seven federally recognized tribes and two Indian communities on the eastern slope of the Sierra Nevada Mountain Range. The Toiyabe Board of Directors is a coalition of tribal governments composed of two representatives from each reservation working together to improve our people's health.

Focusing on the well-being of the whole person and stressing disease prevention, we strive to blend the philosophy of traditional ways with appropriate technologies of western medicine. We are dedicated to the positive state of health of individuals, families and communities and to the preservation of our culture, race and tribal entities.

Training Indian people in the health field is one key way to improve the health of our people, both now and in the future. Consequently, career development is emphasized through monthly staff training programs, as well as attendance at appropriate training programs in other locations. The entire staff has received training in: health concepts and wellness promotion; nutrition; stress reduction; CPR; special needs of elders; the Indian Child Welfare Act; and other related topics.

The tribes and rancherias/reservations in the service area are:

  • Utu Gwaitu Paiute Tribe of the Benton Paiute Reservation
  • Paiute-Shoshone Indians of the Bishop Community of the Bishop Colony
  • Bridgeport Paiute Indian Colony
  • Ft. Independence Community of Paiute Indians, Ft. Independence Indian Reservation
  • Big Pine Band of Owens Valley Paiute-Shoshone Indians, Big Pine Reservation
  • Death Valley Timbi-Sha Shoshone Band
  • Lone Pine Band of the Owens Valley Paiute-Shoshone Indians
