SOCIAL WELLNESS PROGRAM

The Social Wellness Program at the California Rural Indian Health Board, Inc. is directed toward the areas of:

Substance Abuse Treatment and Prevention

Mental Health Issues

Domestic Violence

Indian Child Welfare Issues

Substance Abuse Treatment and Prevention

The Social Wellness Program is heavily involved in it's second year of an Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention, U.S. Department of Justice grant to support Drug-Free Communities.
Educating young people about the hazards of alcohol and other drug use and arming them with skills that deter drug use is an important component of the program. The grant entitled "Strengthening the Circle: A Rural Native American/Indian Approach to the Prevention of Substance Abuse" utilizes the Gathering of Native Americans (GONA) approach. This model has been adapted to solidify efforts of the Central California GONA, through the formalization of a coalition and development of the coalition to northern California tribes as well. Youth GONA's were held in the summer of 2000 in both the central area and along California's north coast. Nearly 100 youth participated in these events covering a span of one week for each event.
The Social Wellness Program encourages and promotes trainings throughout the year at various locations with a variety of topics dealing with treatment, prevention, and care for families and others afflicted with substance abuse problems.

Domestic Violence

The issue of violence in our communities is of great concern. Such issues as elder abuse, child abuse, sexual assault, and intimate partner violence are addressed in workshops and trainings that are available through the Family and Community Health Services Social Wellness Program. Trainings held at major universities and national conference sites throughout the year, bring much needed information to workers and others confronting these issues daily.

Indian Child Welfare

The Social Wellness Program supports the national forum surrounding Indian Child Welfare and participates in dialogue with the National Indian Child Welfare Association, attends trainings in the issue, and encourages tribal programs to participate.
