DID YOU KNOW?
- Injury is the leading cause of death for Native Americans aged 1 - 44 in America. (The IHS Provider, September 1997).
- The overall rate of death due to unintentional injury for American Indian children, based on data from 1992 to 1994, is 52.3 deaths per 100,000 children per year, which is almost twice that of children for all races. (American Academy of Pediatrics, December 1999).
- According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, American Indians have a 204% greater chance of dying from unintentional injuries when compared to the total of all U.S. races.
To address these problems, CRIHB has focused injury prevention efforts on a variety of topics, including
home safety, bicycle safety, motor vehicle occupant protection, and
violence prevention. The ultimate goal of the Pathways to Injury Prevention program is to reduce the high rates of injuries and deaths related to accidents in American Indian communities. CRIHB will serve as a central location for injury prevention resources, training and expertise and will support a
lending library of safety and injury prevention material.
